SoundCloud's recommendation system reads several signals at once, and they aren't interchangeable. Here is what each one is actually doing behind the number.

The base signal and the cheapest per unit. A play alone tells the platform someone opened the track, nothing more. On its own it does very little for recommendation weight, which is why plays work best stacked underneath likes, comments or reposts rather than ordered in isolation.
